The Best Soap for Dry Skin (And What to Avoid)

The Best Soap for Dry Skin (And What to Avoid)

If your skin feels tight, itchy, or dry after washing, most people reach for lotion. But the better fix is usually upstream — it's the soap itself.

Why Soap Dries Out Your Skin

Most commercial soap isn't soap at all. It's a detergent bar — formulated with synthetic surfactants like sodium lauryl sulfate that are highly effective at stripping oils. That's great for cleaning a greasy pan. It's not great for your skin, which relies on its natural oil layer to stay supple and protected.

When that oil layer gets stripped away with every wash, your skin compensates by feeling tight, flaky, and uncomfortable. You add lotion. The lotion helps temporarily. You wash again. The cycle repeats.

The solution isn't more lotion. It's a soap that doesn't strip your skin in the first place.

What Dry Skin Actually Needs

Skin that runs dry needs a cleanser that:

  • Lifts dirt and oil without over-stripping — real soap, not detergent
  • Retains natural glycerin — commercial bars remove glycerin; handmade bars keep it, and glycerin draws moisture to skin
  • Uses nourishing base oils — tallow, olive oil, and coconut oil all contribute to a bar that cleans gently and leaves skin feeling comfortable
  • Contains no synthetic fragrance — fragrance is a common irritant that can make dry skin worse

Why Tallow Works for Dry Skin

Beef tallow has a fatty acid profile remarkably similar to human skin. It absorbs well, doesn't clog pores, and nourishes without leaving a greasy residue. Before the rise of industrial soapmaking, tallow was the standard fat used in bar soap — not because it was cheap, but because it worked.

We use it for the same reason.

What to Avoid

If you have dry skin, steer clear of:

  • Any bar listing sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) or sodium laureth sulfate (SLES)
  • "Fragrance" or "parfum" in the ingredient list
  • Antibacterial soaps — the active ingredients are harsh and strip skin aggressively
  • Foam boosters and lather enhancers — often synthetic and drying
