Pick up a bar of soap at any big box store and you'll see the same thing: a bright label, a stock photo of a waterfall or a leaf, and a list of claims you can't verify. It's packaging designed to sell, not to say anything.
We took a different approach.
Packaging as a First Impression
Your soap box is the first thing a customer holds before they ever use the product. It sets expectations — for the quality inside, for the brand behind it, and for what kind of company you're buying from. We believe that packaging should be honest about all three.
At Ol' McDonald Soap Co., every box is illustrated in a style inspired by the American wilderness — rugged landscapes, open skies, and the kind of scenery that makes you want to get outside. It's not decoration for decoration's sake. It's an expression of what we're about: soap made for people who live actively, work with their hands, and don't settle for synthetic shortcuts.
Why Illustrated Art Instead of Photography
We chose illustration over product photography because it captures something a photo can't — a feeling. The wide-open scenes on our boxes aren't just pretty. They're a reminder of why clean, simple ingredients matter. You're not just buying soap. You're buying into a standard.
What's on the Box Means Something
Every element of our packaging is intentional:
- The scene reflects the character of the bar inside — Glacier Pure features the cold, clear waters of the Pacific Northwest; Saltwater Citrus brings the Gulf Coast to life
- The color palette is drawn from the landscape itself — navy skies, gold sun, the deep greens and blues of wilderness water
- The typography is bold and American — chunky, proud, built to last, just like the soap
A Box Worth Keeping
We hear from customers who save our boxes. That's not an accident — it's the point. We make packaging worth keeping because we make soap worth using. If the box ends up on a shelf long after the bar is gone, that's the best review we could ask for.
