What Makes Handmade Soap Different?

Handmade soap is not automatically better simply because it is handmade.

But small-batch soapmaking gives the maker direct control over the recipe, ingredients, cure time, scent, and final bar. That means you can know more about what is in your soap—and why it is there.

How Traditional Soap Is Made

Traditional bar soap is made by combining fats or oils with water and lye. This process is called saponification.

As the ingredients react, they become soap. The finished bar is then cured for several weeks, allowing excess water to evaporate and the bar to become firmer.

The fats and oils used in a recipe help shape a bar’s character: its hardness, lather, and overall feel during use.

What “Small Batch” Means

Small-batch soap is made in limited quantities rather than on a large industrial production line.

That does not mean every handmade bar is identical—and that is part of the point. Slight variation in color, cut, or appearance can happen from batch to batch, especially when makers use naturally derived ingredients and essential oils.

What matters is that the maker is intentional about the formula, process, and finished product.

Ingredients Matter

A good soap label should tell you clearly what is in the bar.

At Ol’ McDonald Soap Co., we use beef tallow, coconut oil, water, and lye to make traditional bar soap. Where a bar is scented, we use essential oils.

We do not use synthetic fragrance, parabens, sulfates, palm oil, or microplastics in our bars.

Made to Be Used

A handmade bar should not just look good on the shelf. It should earn a place in your everyday routine.

Our bars are made for showers, sink-side use, travel, camp, the boat, and wherever a straightforward bar of soap comes in handy. Store it on a draining soap dish between uses, and it will stay firmer and last longer.

The Ol’ McDonald Way

We make soap the traditional way because we like knowing what goes into it.

Each Ol’ McDonald Soap Co. bar begins with a simple ingredient approach, then gets its own identity through scent and artwork inspired by the outdoors. No generic packaging. No mystery formula. Just a well-made bar built for everyday use.
