A bar of soap should not be a mystery.
At Ol’ McDonald Soap Co., we believe you ought to be able to read the label, recognize the ingredients, and understand why each one is there. We make traditional bar soap with practical ingredients and leave out the extras that do not belong in our formula.
What We Use
Our bars begin with a straightforward foundation:
-
Beef tallow
-
Coconut Oil (only in our scented bars)
-
Water
-
Lye—the ingredient that transforms oils and fats into real soap
That process is called saponification. By the time the bar is cured, the oils and lye have become soap.
Tallow is at the heart of many of our bars because it helps create the kind of soap we believe in: firm, long-lasting, rich in creamy lather, and ready for everyday use. It is a traditional ingredient that has earned its place in the soap room for generations.
For scented bars, we use essential oils. For customers who prefer to keep it simple, we offer unscented options without added fragrance.
What We Leave Out
We keep our ingredient lists focused. If an ingredient does not help make a better bar, it does not need to be there.
Here is what you will not find in our soap:
-
No palm oil — We choose not to use palm oil in our formulas.
-
No parabens — Traditional bar soap does not require the preservative systems commonly used in water-based personal-care products.
-
No microplastics — We do not use plastic microbeads or plastic exfoliating particles in our bars.
-
No synthetic fragrance — Our scented soaps use essential oils; our unscented bars have no added fragrance.
-
No added dyes — We let the ingredients and natural variations in each batch do the talking.
-
No sulfates — Our traditional soap formulas do not use SLS or SLES detergent surfactants.
-
No unnecessary fillers — We make soap, not a long ingredient list.
Why Simple Matters
“Natural” is a word that gets used a lot, but it can mean different things from one brand to the next. We prefer to be specific.
We make traditional tallow soap with ingredients chosen for a reason. The goal is not to chase trends or pack a label with buzzwords. The goal is a dependable bar that cleans well, lasts well, and feels right in your hand.
That means honest ingredients, clear labels, and soap made the old-fashioned way.
Read the Label
When you are choosing a bar of soap, take a moment to look past the front label.
Ask yourself:
-
Can I understand what these ingredients are?
-
Does the company clearly explain what it uses?
-
Is the soap scented with essential oils, synthetic fragrance, or not scented at all?
-
Does the formula match what matters to me—such as no palm oil, no dyes, or no added fragrance?
A better bar starts with knowing what is in it—and what is not.
Ol’ McDonald Soap Co. makes straightforward, hard-working soap for people who value simple ingredients and honest craftsmanship.
